Motorcycle Security: How to Protect Your Bike at Home & Away
For many riders, motorcycle security is something we don't think about until we hear about a bike being stolen nearby.
Whether your motorcycle is parked on the road, sitting on the driveway overnight or tucked away in a garage, having the right security in place can make it much harder for a thief to take advantage.
And as we head into autumn and winter, when the evenings get darker and bikes may spend more time parked up, it's a good time to take another look at your security setup.
Motorcycle theft in the UK
The good news is that the latest figures show motorcycle theft has actually decreased year-on-year. Between June 2025 and May 2026, 16,585 motorcycles were reported stolen to the DVLA, a 3.5% decrease compared with the previous year.
However, motorcycle theft remains a concern across the UK. Bristol recorded 413 reported motorcycle thefts during the same period, making it the second-highest city in the figures behind London.
Interestingly, the ten most-stolen motorcycles were all lightweight commuter scooters, showing that theft isn't just a concern for owners of high-value or performance motorcycles.
So, whether you ride every day, commute on two wheels or simply have a bike sitting on your driveway, it's worth considering how well protected it is.
Why use more than one security device?
There isn't one lock that can guarantee your motorcycle won't be stolen. Instead, effective motorcycle security is about creating layers of protection.
A disc lock can help prevent the bike from being ridden away, while a D lock or chain can secure it to a suitable fixed object. At home, an anchor point can provide that fixed point in the first place. The more barriers you put between a thief and your motorcycle, the more difficult and time-consuming the theft becomes.
Choosing the right motorcycle security
The best security setup depends on where you park your bike and how you use it.
Disc locks
Disc locks are a popular choice for securing your motorcycle when you're out and about. They're compact, relatively easy to carry and can be fitted directly to the brake disc.

The most important thing is to think about how your bike is actually stored.
A security device that's left at home isn't much use when you're parked somewhere else, and a lightweight portable lock might not be enough for a motorcycle that's permanently kept outside.
Protect your bike before you need to
Motorcycle security doesn't need to be complicated, but it's worth giving it some thought before you need it.
As we head into the darker months, take a look at where your motorcycle is parked and ask yourself: could I make it harder for someone to steal? Whether that's adding a disc lock, upgrading to a high-security D lock, investing in a heavy-duty chain or installing a permanent anchor, even an additional layer of security can make a difference.
